How Shopify fees add up

(01)

Subscription

A monthly plan fee. Basic, Grow and Advanced cost about a quarter less when billed yearly; Plus has a starting price and a contract term.

(02)

Card processing

With Shopify Payments, each online sale pays the plan’s card rate, a percentage plus a fixed amount, and international cards pay more. Higher plans pay lower rates.

(03)

Third-party fee

Take payments through another provider and Shopify adds its own fee on every sale: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, on top of what the provider charges.

Shopify fee questions

(01)

How much does Shopify take per sale?

With Shopify Payments in the US, 2.9% + 30¢ per online sale on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced and 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus, with 1% more for international cards. Shopify adds no transaction fee of its own. With another payment provider it charges 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% on top of the provider’s rate. More in Shopify fees explained.

(02)

When should I move from Basic to Grow?

In the US, from about $25,000 of online sales a month. Billed yearly, Grow costs $50 a month more than Basic, and its card rate is 0.2 points lower, so it pays for itself at $25,000. The calculator works out the point for your own mix of cards.

(03)

When is Shopify Plus worth it?

On fees alone, at about $800,000 of online sales a month against Advanced billed yearly with Shopify Payments: Plus costs $2,001 a month more and saves 0.25 points per sale. With another provider the point is about $500,000, because the third-party fee drops from 0.6% to 0.2%. Most brands move earlier for features only Plus has: full checkout customization, unlimited B2B catalogs, up to 9 expansion stores and up to 10x API limits. See Shopify Plus pricing for the full cost, or our Shopify Plus development.

(04)

Does Shopify charge a transaction fee with Shopify Payments?

No. With Shopify Payments you pay only the card rate. Shopify’s transaction fee applies when you take payments through another provider.

(05)

What does Shopify cost in Serbia?

The same dollar prices as in the US, from $29 a month on Basic billed yearly. Shopify Payments isn’t available in Serbia, so card payments go through a local processor and Shopify adds 2% per sale on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced or 0.2% on Plus. More on the Serbia page.

(06)

What isn’t included in these numbers?

Premium and American Express cards, which cost more, as well as taxes, currency conversion, chargebacks, paid apps, themes and your domain.
